Background:

Perichondritis of the auricle in adults can be secondary to traumatic agents, external otitis or surgery being Pseudomona aeruginosa the bacteria more often isolated. The objective of this study is to clarify the clinical characteristics of the otogenic perichondritis.

Method:

We have performed a prospective study of 72 hospitalized patients in the national ENT hospital of Hanoi with that diagnosis and these following variables have been evaluated: Age, sex, personal antecedents, clinical symptoms, affected auricle, complementary explorations, treatment, evolution and stay. Study design is a transversal prospective study.

Results:

The result of our study: the main symptoms are ear pain (77,8%) and hot feeling (63,9%). The most form is round.(36,1%) The location is mostly 1/3 superior (26,4%). The form is mostly ear-like (43,1%) The measure is from 1 – 2 cm (54,2%). The antibiotic resistence is increasing. The most frequently bacteria is still Pseudomona aeruginosa. The effective antibiotics are mainly quinolone, imipenem, cefoperazone and ceftazidime.

Conclusion:

Perichondritis of the auricle must be immediately carefully treated.
