A newly developed biofeedback program for patients with facial paralysis supports the regenreation

Objective:

A facial paralysis is an obvious limitation for affected patients, functional as well as in their quality of life. According to the guidelines, a drug therapy with cortisone is recommended, additionally an intensive training of the facial muscles should be started as soon as possible. For better visualization of the training, we have developed a digital biofeedback mirror for motion magnification.

Methods:

The base of the biofeedback mirror is the Eulerian video magnification. Hereby it is possible to exponentiate and therefore visualize even smallest movements of the patient's face. By doing so, motivation can be increased. The training took place on 3 days in a row right after diagnosis and again 3 months afterwards. Furthermore, quality of life and functional limitations were evaluated by the FACE and FDI questionnaire.

Results:

We were able to show, that after three months the rate of residues were lower in the intervention group than in the control group. Furthermore, all of our patients rated the biofeedback program as positive. Even in the analysis of the questionnaires FDI and FACE the patients of the intervention group showed better results after three months than the control group ones.

Conclusion:

Our biofeedback program is a meaningful support for patients with facial paralysis.
