Background Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a generally present topic among musicians and speakers. More specifically MPA can differ before, during and after a musical performance.

Methods A study was performed with 424 musicians, orchestra musicians and choir singers. The musicians were required to fill in a questionnaire directly following musical performance. The questionnaire contained the German version of the Questionnaire on Musical Performances (FZAM, Spahn & Nusseck, 2014) addressing the situations before, during and after the performance. Out of the validated questionnaire two forms of apps – for musicians and for speakers – were developed.

Results The cluster analysis yielded a clear distinction of three clusters demanding different coping strategies.

Discussion Until now there was no description of different course types of MPA in the literature. Possible benefits for a better coping with MPA by use of the apps are discussed.
