Introduction Currently there is no universal post treatment followup regime for squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. The availability of immune therapies increases the importance of early detection even in palliative situations. Using current literature, guidelines and data from our cancer center we propose a possible treatment algorithm.

Methods 110 recurrences between 2010 - 2016 and 200 primary cases between 2017 and 06/2019 were analyzed for mortality and localization of recurrence and impact of an early planned panendoscopy and imaging.

Results Mortality of recurrences and residual tumor is higher the earlier it occurs. A planned intensive early followup can lead to faster diagnosis.

Discussion: We compare our results to the international literature and discuss possible future solutions.
