Incidence of HPV-positive Head and Neck cancer depending on the location of the cancer – an epidemiological research
Background The number of HPV-positive Head and Neck cancer rises in the developed industrialised countries, especially for oropharyngeal cancer. This study investigates the number of HPV-positive patients with laryngopharyngeal cancer. Furthermore, we wanted to look if there was a context with advanced tumor stage, nicotine, age and comorbidity.
Material and methods In total, 284 patients with Head and Neck cancer (HPV-positve or HPV-negative) who had been treated in Helios Klinikum Erfurt between January 2017 and June 2019 formed the sample set. The middle age was 62,9 years.
Results 25 % of the patients were HPV-positive. As expected, the number of HPV-positive patients differed from the cancer location. The age at the time of diagnosis did not differ relevant between HPV-positive and HPV-negative patients (64,3 years vs. 62,5 years). The tumor stage (TNM7) was lower for HPV-positive than for HPV-negative patients.
Conclusion Meanwhile, the number of HPV-positive patients is relatively high at our patients, especially for oropharyngeal cancer.
