Evaluation of the Speech Comprehension after Chorus Sound Processor Upgrade

Introduction The Chorus sound processor was recently introduced into the market for users of the first generation implant systems of Advanced Bionics, namely C1. The objective is, to compare the performance of the former sound processor and the Chorus in terms of hearing and speech comprehension and usability in daily routine.

Material and Methods Currently ten adults participate in this investigation (four female, six male). They were all implanted between 1996 and 1998 with the C1 implant. Mean duration of implant use was 21.69 years. Five of ten have a prelingual hearing loss. Five have additional disabilities.

The German speech comprehension tests monosyllabics and sentences in quiet as well as sentences in noise are conducted after an adaptation time of 4-6 weeks. In addition the participants complete a questionnaire regarding the subjective quality of hearing and speech comprehension and ease of use in daily routine.

Results Outcomes in the speech comprehension tests show a benefit for the Chorus compared to the previously used processor, especially in noise. All patients are satisfied with the new technology of the Chorus device and the additional features. Further results will be expected till the conference.

Conclusions The technical upgrade can lead to improved hearing results, even in the case of long-standing CI care. In addition, a longer battery life, the positive evaluation of the processor's handling and the integrated Roger receiver for the reprogramming speak for themselves.
