Background Temporal bone dissection exercises are essential for the training of ent-specialists. However, human temporal bone specimens are rarely available. The synthetic Phacon temporal bone model available commercially represents an alternative.

Materials and Methods For evaluation of the temporal bone dissection exercises with the Phacon model 12 physicians (7 unexperienced, 5 experienced ear surgeons) performed the classical procedures in mastoid surgery exposing the typical anatomic structures. The duration of preparation and difficulties in exposing certain anatomic structures were evaluated.

Results The average time of preparation was 210 minutes. The most challenging part of the temporal bone dissection was the preparation of the Saccus endolymphaticus. The experienced ear surgeons assessed especially the labyrinth not to be lifelike.

Conclusion The Phacon temporal bone model is suitable to make the first steps in temporal bone dissection exercises. However, it can not completely replace preparations of human temporal bone specimens.
