Zu den malignen Lymphomen zählen einerseits die Hodgkin- und andererseits die Non-Hodgkin-Lymphome (NHL). Das Hodgkin-Lymphom besteht mikroskopisch aus Hodgkin- und Sternberg-Reed-Riesenzellen, die in einem charakteristischen Hintergrund aus aktivierten Lymphozyten, Granulozyten und Histiozyten liegen, und unterscheidet sich anhand dieser Charakteristika von den Non-Hodgkin-Lymphomen.
