Mittlerweile ist unbestritten, dass die Mundgesundheit einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf den gesamten physischen Gesundheitszustand hat. Besonders eindrücklich zeigen dies wissenschaftliche Studien für Erkrankungen des Herz-Kreislaufsystems. Im Fall einer generellen Immunschwäche spiegeln die oralen Schleimhäute das Defizit in Form von Infektionen, Entzündungen und Geweberückgang wieder. Komplementäre Ansätze, z. B. aus der Traditionellen Chinesischen Medizin (TCM) berücksichtigen direkte energetische Verbindungen zwischen einzelnen Zähnen und Organen bzw. Organsystemen. Damit ermöglicht ein Blick in den Mund bei genauer Betrachtung Rückschlüsse auf den gesamten Körperzustand.
