It is with great excitement that I present this special issue of Seminars in Plastic Surgery in which we explore trends within plastic surgery in the State of Israel. Commonly referred to as the Holy Land, Israel is a 74-year-old country, yet its rich history goes back more than 3,000 years. The country has grown to be well deserving of its image of “A Start-up Nation,” Israel enjoys a modern standard of living in line with trends seen in the Western world, its roots are exceptionally diverse with ties to a wide range of immigrant cultures, religious groups, and ethnicities throughout the globe, all of which add to its storied past.

When considering the development of surgical and medical standards within the nation, Israel is unique for several reasons. Against a backdrop of constant internal and external conflicts, an influx of immigrants and considerable experience in local and international humanitarian aid, the Israeli medical system has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and practical experience over the last several decades.

From a clinical perspective, the majority of Israel's medical expertise is trained and influenced mainly by North America; however, some of the first plastic surgeons to practice in the country came from Europe and Africa. Today, Israel stands as a beacon of the levels of development, and innovation of a scientific industry can attain when given the necessary foundation to grow upon.

In this issue, we present several articles relevant to the state of surgical practice in Israel, including a variety of reconstructive and esthetic topics and a brief overview on the history of plastic surgery in Israel such as the addition of Israeli innovations to the field of plastic surgery. I would like to acknowledge my mentors from the United States for their trust, teaching, and guidance along the way. I would also like to thank all the invited authors for their efforts and collaboration in compiling this collection of papers.

Sincerely,
