Abstract

Despite the availability of several preventive strategies, periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty is a devastating complication. As increasing numbers of arthroplasty procedures are being performed, the number of periprosthetic joint infections will also continue to increase. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial in achieving successful infection control. The present article presents an overview of the diagnostic and therapeutic options in the management of acute PJI.
