Metformin ist das am häufigsten verschriebene orale Antidiabetikum und wird sowohl in den deutschen als auch den internationalen Leitlinien als Medikament der ersten Wahl empfohlen. Obwohl die genauen Wirkprinzipien noch nicht komplett bekannt sind, so hat sich doch eine Vielzahl neuer Einsichten ergeben. Neben der antidiabetischen Wirkung sollen sowohl der molekulare Zusammenhang als auch die Bedeutung des Medikamentes bei der Behandlung bestimmter Krebserkrankungen und dem polyzystischen Ovarialsyndrom diskutiert werden.
