Die septische Gonarthritis verläuft in der Regel akut. Sie schädigt das betroffene Gelenk und ist potenziell lebensbedrohlich. Daher bedarf sie einer zumeist notfallmäßigen operativen Sanierung. Johns et al. (Newcastle, Australien) verglichen retrospektiv die Ergebnisse nach Arthroskopie (ASK) und Arthrotomie (AT). Sie zeigten eine Überlegenheit des arthroskopischen Vorgehens in Bezug auf Revisionsraten und Gelenkfunktion im Verlauf.
