Dr. Kristen Ban was born in Chicago, IL, and spent the majority of her youth in the area. She received her undergraduate degree in biology at Duke University in Durham, NC, before going back to Chicago, completing her medical school at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. She remained at Loyola University of Chicago for her internship and residency in general surgery, spending 2 years to also complete her masters in clinical research methods for which she was a clinical scholar in residence at the American College of Surgeons, focusing on quality. She then went on to Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO, for her fellowship in colon and rectal surgery. Kristen then joined us here at Cleveland Clinic in 2021, where she has been clinically busy in all aspects of treating patients with colorectal disease and enjoys the new challenges and learning daily to positively impact patients' lives. She is an active researcher and writer and has also won several teaching awards. Away from medicine, she enjoys traveling, cycling, exploring new cultures through cuisine, and spending time with her husband Gayan DeSilva, parents (Michael and Jean Ban), and siblings (Stephen and Elizabeth Ban).
