Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Analysis by Using Mobile Application

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is characterized as the inability to obtain prolonged seizure freedom after adequate trials with two tolerated, carefully selected, and used antiepileptic medication schedules (either as monotherapies or in combination). In other words, individuals with DRE continue to experience seizures even after trying several antiepileptic drugs. DRE affects 30% of people with epilepsy and has been shown to have a significant negative impact on quality of life. People with DRE typically require more specialized care and might benefit from alternative remedies, including surgery or nutritional regimens. Since an individual’s responsiveness to antiseizure medication is a dynamic process rather than a static situation, we developed a mobile application that primary health care practitioners can use to assess this status frequently. The App contains an integrated algorithm for predicting DRE based on the study “Definition of drug-resistant epilepsy: Consensus proposal by the ad hoc Task Force of the ILAE Commission on Therapeutic Strategies” (2010). The formulation, dosage, stop date, maximum dose permitted during treatment, and seizure control should be filled out in the App when entering past prescription information. After all the medication details have been input, a prediction page will display as a result of this built-in algorithm. Whether the individual has drug-resistant epilepsy or not, as well as whether or not the dosage level and duration are sufficient, will be determined by the prediction. The expected results will assist primary care physicians in determining what medicines the patient may require.
