Bromomethylation of aromatic hydrocarbons proceeds in >90% yield using the phase-transfer catalyst tetradecyltri-methylammonium bromide with 1,3,5-trioxane and a mixture of 48% aqueous hydrobromic acid and glacial acetic acid; diaryl-methane by-products are not formed.
