Nitrilium salts (1) react with N,N-disubstituted amides (2) furnishing N 1,N 2,N 2-trisubstituted N 1-acylamidinium salts (4). These salts are effective substrates with the N 1-acyl residue as leaving group for nucleophilic substitutions. Reactions with the nucleophiles methanol, and imines (6) are described.
