The synthesis of lignan natural products dehydroxycubebin 1a and burseran 1b by a nitrile oxide cycloaddition of 3,4-methylenedioxybenzonitrile oxide, generated in situ, to 2,5-dihydrofuran followed by reductive cleavage, tosylation and nucleophilic displacement of a secondary tosylate is described.
