New sterically highly hindered 2′-substituted 2,2″, 6,6″-tetramethyl-m-terphenyls 1 were synthesized. Lithiation of the 2′-iodide 1b and subsequent reaction with electrophiles gave new m-terphenyls 1f - 1j, group transformations gave 1k - 1p. The thiol acetate 1o could be tetra-functionalized and doubly bridged to form a bimacrocyclic concave thiol acetate 3.
