A new efficient procedure for the selective trimethylsilylation of readily available tetrachlorocyclopropene is described. The electrochemical silylation gave the title compound 2 on a preparative scale in 78% yield. Ionization of 2 to its corresponding cyclopropenium ion and its functionalization by treatment with arenes is described. The properties of the title compound were also investigated.
