A direct substitution of the phenylsulfonyl group is observed during the reaction of Grignard reagents with β-phenylsulfonyl-γ-oxo arenebutanenitriles in the presence of LiClO4. Primary, secondary and functionalized organo magnesium reagents can be profitably used for this procedure.
