Abstract
Trochanteric fractures are fractures of the elderly people. The commonly associated problems like osteoporosis and internal diseases face the treating surgeon with biomechanically as well as medically demanding situations. In an overview the authors address the principles of treatment of trochanteric fractures where the characteristics of rather complementary than excluding extra- and intramedullary devices for osteosynthesis are discussed. Pitfalls are depicted and recommendations, particularly for treatment of failed primary osteosynthesis in proximal femoral fractures, from the viewpoint of the long clinical experience of the senior author are given.
Key words
pertrochanteric fracture - proximal femur - failed osteosynthesis
