Abstract
Based on the simultaneously performed direct lymphography of mamma and the homolateral
upper extremity in patients with mammary carcinoma, the following issues were raised
and discussed: Visualisation of the mammary lymphatic system by way of lymphography,
with special respect to its lesions caused by the tumor and the prognostic evaluation
of these lesions. The results of lymphographic examinations showed that the lymphatic
system of the affected mamma and that of the homolateral arm only join in the region
of the central axillary lymph node station. Furthermore, some problems related to
postoperative morbidity were raised which, relying upon the findings of the simultaneously
performed direct lymphography of the mamma and the homolateral arm, are provoked by
the unnecessarily expanded operative dissection.
