Summary

Tibial shaft fracture characteristics, such as fracture severity and whether the fracture was open or closed, are most strongly linked to higher rates of delayed or nonunion, reoperation, complications, and functional limitations. Lack of cortical continuity (≥ 50%) between the fracture ends following fixation also increases the risk of reoperation in tibial shaft fractures. Age and gender do not appear to be associated with adverse outcomes.
