The antrochoanal polyp is defined as a polyp arising from the floor or lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, prolapsing through an accessory ostium into the nasal cavity, and enlarging to fill the nasopharynx. In the literature, the generally reported incidence of antrochoanal polyp is 5%.

The objective of the present study was to examine the incidence of antrochoanal polyps in the population of nasal polyp patients. In the ENT Clinic of Zvezdara University Hospital, Belgrade, 302 consecutive patients operated on from January 2000 to December 2004 were included in this study. Polyps were diagnosed by history, ENT, microbiologic, allergologic, radiologic (CT), and endoscopic examination.

The antrochoanal polyp was found in 29 of 302 nasal polyp patients. The antrochoanal polyp patients were aged from 9 to 38 years with an average of 23 years. The number of males (19) was significantly greater (p) than the number of females (10).

This study demonstrated that the antrochoanal polyp represents 9.7% of all nasal polyps. It was more common in males with the highest incidence in the second and third decades of life.
