Abstract

From the stem bark of Funtumia africana (Benth.) Stapf three steroid alkaloids of the conanine-type were isolated. Two of them were identified as the new 12α-hydroxy norcona-N(18),1,4-trienin-3-one and 11α,12α-dihydroxy norcona-N(18),1,4-trienin-3-one, respectively. The third alkaloid proved to be identical with holonamine (i.e. 11α-hydroxy norcona-N(18),1,4-trienin-3-one), previously isolated from the stem bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica. Extracts of Funtumia africana showed a dose-related reduction of heart frequency as tested in in vivo and in vitro experiments and thus a similar pharmacological activity as extracts of the stem bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica.
