Summary

Collagenous colitis is a rarely recognized disease characterized clinically by watery diarrhoea, and morphologically by a broad bandlike deposition of increased amounts of collagen under the basement membrane of the surface epithelium. Pathogenetically, a disturbance of the colonic pericryptal fibroblastic sheath is most probably involved.
