Significance

A tin-mediated procedure to synthesize calix[8]- and [9]arenes preferentially over the commonly made calix[6]- and [4]arenes is reported: calix[8]- and [9]arene are synthesized in 23% and 55% isolated yield, respectively, whereas smaller calix[n]arenes (n = 4-7) are made in 6.5% total yield.
