Significance

Direct reduction of esters to aldehydes is an important synthetic transformation. While several reagents for such a transformation have been developed, they mostly require very low temperatures or are not convenient to prepare. The reagent LDBBA smoothly reduces various esters of aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic acids into the corresponding aldehydes at 0 °C in high yields. It is very easy to prepare and can be stored at least for half a year.
