Significance

Reported here is the further investigation of electron-donating Rh-phosphine complexes which are successfully used in asymmetric reduction of unprotected α-amino ketones. This methodology, that eliminates protection-deprotection steps, is of great value in industrial synthesis of many enantiopure 1,2-amino alcohols for which a truly practical route is still lacking.
