Significance

Carbaporphyrinoids are analogous to porphyrin systems but for the substitution of a pyrrole for a carbocycle. These systems exhibit unusual spectroscopic properties and have also been shown to form stable organometallic species. Of the few examples of dicarboporphyrinoids that exist, still rarer are those with adjacent carbocycles. The authors demonstrate the use of fulvene intermediates for the synthesis of these porphyrin analogues.
