Significance

Tungsten oxide nanoclusters bound to mesoporous SBA-15 material [WOx/SBA-15(x)] were readily prepared by treatment of a mixture of P123 block copolymer and aqueous sodium tungstate with HCl and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) followed by calcination. The oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide using 70% tert-butyl hydroperoxide was carried out with WOx/SBA-15(20) to give methyl phenyl sulfoxide in 99% yield (14 examples).
