Imaging Modalities in the Evaluation of Primary HyperparathyroidismPublication History

Abstract
The results of several imaging modalities for the evaluation of parathyroid adenoma in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism are presented. Different modalities (sonography, magnetic resonance tomography, computerized tomography, thallium-technetium-subtraction-scintigraphy) were performed in urinary stone patients after establishing the diagnosis by repeated measurements of serum calcium and serum parathyroid hormone. Sonography showed the best diagnostic efficacy (64 %). By combining different imaging modalities a diagnostic efficacy of 90 % was achieved. It is concluded that an interdisciplinary evaluation in patients with proven hyperparathyroidism should be initiated by the urologist and thyroid exploration should be recommended to the patient.
