Experiences with the Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt of Raimondi (Preliminary Report)

Abstract

For the last 1 1/2 years in the neurosurgical division of the Elisabethenkrankenhaus, Ravensburg, ventriculo-peritonal drainage has been established in patients with hydrocephalus internus by means of the uni-shunt system designed by Raimondi. The early results of 42 patients demonstrate a rate of 15% postoperative complications.

The system failed nearly always with patients whose CSF contained a large amount of cells and/or protein following progressive destruction of the brain. In such cases, the central and/or the abdominal end becomes obstructed. According to our experience, the advantage of the uni-shunt system is the simple implantation, the low rate of complications, and the modest revision rate of an incompetent system.

Zusammenfassung

Während der letzten 11/2 Jahre wurden in der Neurochirurgischen Abteilung des Elisabethenkrankenhauses in Ravensburg Ventrikulo-Peritoneal-Drainagen mit dem Uni-Shunt-System nach Raimondi vorgenommen. Die ersten Ergebnisse von 42 Patienten zeigen eine Komplikationsrate von 15 %.

Die Funktionsunfähigkeit trat fast immer bei solchen Patienten auf, deren Liquor hohe Zellzahl und/oder Protein in hohem Maße als Folge fortgeschrittener Zerstörung des Gehirns enthielt. Nach unserer Erfahrung liegen die Vorteile des Uni-Shunt-Systems in der einfacheren Implantation, der niedrigen Komplikationsrate und relativ einfachen Revision.
