Clinical Evaluation of Nootropil (Piracetam) in Severe Cranio-cerebral Injuries

Abstract

The author reports observations concerning the use of Nootropil (Piracetam or 2-oxo-pyrrolidone acetamide), a product of UCB Belgium and POLFA Poland.

This report is based on clinical observations of 50 cases of severe cranio-cerebral injuries (brain stem contusion) in children ranging from 6 months to 15 years of age, treated in the Department of Paediatric Neurosurgery in Warsaw (Poland) from 1974-1977.

Nootropil was administered in 25 successive cases in daily doses 30-150 mg/kg. The remaining 25 cases received placebo. After this administration of Nootropil the mortality rate in children was lower (2 deaths versus 8 deaths in control group) and the respiratory disturbances improved in the majority of cases. In late results, the general and neurological condition was good in 16 cases after the administration of Nootropil and only in 3 cases of the control group.

In conclusion, the author feels that Nootropil should be considered as a drug of therapeutic value in cases of cranio-cerebral injuries in children.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird über Beobachtungen an 50 schweren Schädel-Hirn-Verletzungen (Hirnstammkontusionen) bei Kindern im Alter von 6 Monaten bis 15 Jahren berichtet. 25 Kinder wurden mit Piracetam (Nootropil) in Dosen von 30-150 mg/kg täglich behandelt. Die restlichen 25 Kinder erhielten Placebo. Bei Kindern mit Piracetam zeigte sich eine geringere Mortalität und meist eine Abnahme der Atemstörungen. Die Nachuntersuchungen ergaben bei 16 Kindern der behandelten Gruppe einen guten Allgemein- und neurologischen Status, während bei der Kontrollgruppe nur in 3 Fällen ein gutes Ergebnis erzielt wurde.

Der Autor glaubt, daß Piracetam-Medikation einen therapeutischen Wert bei Schädel-Hirnverletzungen besitzt.
