Significance

The study of the morphology of films of π-systems on metallic substrates is interesting for single molecule fluorescence studies using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). However, it is hard to obtain information in which the electronic states of the underlying metallic substrate are decoupled from the molecule object of study. A naphthalene diimide based cyclophane (3) with rigid spacers is synthesized. In this way, a system with two separate platforms is developed.
