Jung Kim et al. Impact of 3-second rule for high confidence assignment on the performance
of endoscopists for the real-time optical diagnosis of colorectal polyps
In this prospective study, the effect of a 3-second rule – where a prediction within
3 seconds of polyp histology was defined as high confidence – was evaluated in 8
gastroenterologists categorized as experts and nonexperts. Only in the nonexpert group
was a significant improvement in high confidence accuracy found, implying that the
3-second rule will be most useful for nonexpert endoscopists or trainees, enabling
them to better differentiate between hyperplastic and adenomatous polyps.
