Over 113 students and 1st and 2nd year residents joined EFSUMB’s first Student Summer School held at the Hotel Aquino
in Berlin, Germany on 4–6 September. The school was organised by the EFSUMB Student
Committee and local German tutors with the help of Caroline Ewertsen, Christian Jenssen
and Alina Popescu and the local Campus Academy with a programme of lectures, demonstrations
by experts, and hands-on training for the participants. Thanks to the generous support
of industry – Bracco, Canon, Fujifilm, GE, Mindray, Siemens, Sonoscape and Vinno –
there were 24 machines (including some handheld US devices) to ensure enough time
for each participant to scan under the supervision of the lecturers and tutors. BICUS
and the Falk Foundation also provided much needed support for the event.
The faculty of renowned local and international speakers covered topics from pediatrics
to ultrasound guided interventions with live demonstration and hands-on phantoms for
the participants divided in basic and advanced users. The highlight for the advanced
attendees was the visit to the Charité Hospital Ultrasound Interdisciplinary Department
for live demonstrations and the opportunity for hands-on experience with hospital
patients. This was also offered by the Ultrasound Department of the Federal Armed
Forces Hospital in Berlin.
Learning was combined with interactive cases, quizzes, brainstorming, exchange of
views and experiences, and learning how to teach fellow students.
The students’ impressions and evaluations will be analysed, and depending on these
responses EFSUMB will organise a repetition of the School in the Summer of 2027.
