Lymphocytic Colitis under Treatment with Duloxetine

Zusammenfassung

Die lymphozytäre Kolitis ist eine Erkrankung, die klinisch durch chronische wässrige Diarrhöen gekennzeichnet ist und nur histologisch diagnostiziert werden kann, da koloskopisch makroskopisch unauffällige Schleimhautverhältnisse vorliegen. Ein kausaler Zusammenhang mit dem Einsatz von Medikamenten ist vielfach beschrieben worden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Fall berichtet, in dem eine lymphozytäre Kolitis nach dem Beginn einer Medikation mit dem selektiven Serotonin- und Noradrenalin-Wiederaufnahmehemmer Duloxetin aufgetreten ist und nach dessen Absetzen wieder remittierte. Ein kausaler Zusammenhang zwischen dem Auftreten der lymphozytären Kolitis und Duloxetin als Auslöser ist sehr wahrscheinlich, sodass Duloxetin zu den Medikamenten gezählt werden sollte, die geeignet sind, eine lymphozytäre Kolitis auszulösen.

Abstract

Lymphocytic colitis is a disease characterised by chronic watery diarrhoea that can only be diagnosed histologically, since colonoscopy reveals macroscopically normal mucosa. A causal relationship to the administration of certain drugs has repeatedly been described. In this report we describe a case of lymphocytic colitis that developed after initiation of treatment with duloxetine – a selective serotonin- and noradrenaline-reuptake inhibitor – and remitted after discontinuation of the drug. Since a causal relationship between the onset of lymphocytic colitis and the use of duloxetine is highly probable, duloxetine should be included among those drugs capable of inducing lymphocytic colitis.
