Synthesis of Vittatalactone

Significance

Vittatalactone was identified as a potential sex pheromone of the striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittatum, a cause of major damage to curcubit crops in North America. The ste­reochemical configuration was not fully elucidated prior to this synthesis, although the absolute stereochemistry of the β-lactone moiety was known.
