Summary

Valerian, hops, and valerian hops combinations

Valerian and valerian hops combinations are often applied against insomnia. Valerian extracts and single constituents show anxiolytic and slightly sedative effects in animal studies. The main active constituents have not been identified for valerian. Hop strobiles have a sedative effect in animal studies that might be due to the combination of bitter acids and the essential oil. In clinical studies, valerian root preparations seem to reduce both sleep latency and anxious thoughts. In combination with hops, a mildly sedative effect has been established. Except for gastrointestinal discomforts, preparations from both herbal drugs are generally well tolerated.
