Die Sepsis ist eines der häufigsten und wichtigsten intensivmedizinischen Krankheitsbilder. Ihre konsequente Diagnostik und Therapie ist in erster Linie für den Patienten von entscheidender Bedeutung, aber auch folgenreich für die Krankenhausökonomie. Die Leitlinien der SSC sollen eine Behandlung nach den Maßstäben aktueller klinischer Untersuchungen harmonisieren und damit für den Kliniker erleichtern. Durch die Fülle neuer Erkenntnisse ist es notwendig, vorhandene Leitlinien in regelmäßigen Abständen zu aktualisieren und zu erweitern, sowie lange bestehende Diskussionen weiterzuführen. Hierdurch soll der ständigen Weiterentwicklung medizinischen Wissens Rechnung getragen werden.
