Speech understanding dependent from Electrode Insertion depth within CI recipients

    Introduction:

    Deaf and hearing impaired patients because of a cochlear disorder are implanted with a Cochlear Implant (CI) in ordert o receive speech understanding. Meanwhile the quality of speech understanding is as good, that speech understanding can assist in SSD situation. But the quality of speech understanding various extensively.

    It seems also dependent from electrode depth.

    Material and Method:

    In a retrospective Study two different groups (CI implantation took place between 2010 and 2016, about 150 pstients) were analyzed radiologically and audiologically (Freiburger numbers and monosyllables test). With special focus the difference between numbers and monosyllables results will be analyzed to correlate it with insertion depth.

    Results:

    Depending from the year of age the insertion was different. Only in recent years the first electrode was located near the round window membrane. In former years the first electrode was only located 6 mm far away from round window. The monosyllables understanding was worse when the electrodes were located deeply.

    Discussion:

    The hypothesis will be discussed whether a too deep first electrodesa is less effective or whether this is less important.
