The surgical treatment of mucocele of the frontal sinus is often frustrated due to
the development of recurrences. In the recent past, bioactive glass (BonAlive) has
been proven valuable for the obliteration of open mastoid cavities. In addition to
the stable form and the simple application, this also has the advantage that it has
an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobially effect. Even with highly inflammatory altered
open mastoid cavities a safe obliteration can be achieved regularly. Therefore, it
was obvious to transpose the procedure to the frontal sinus.
On the basis of a retrospective case compilation of three cases so far, the procedure
for the frontal sinus obliteration with bioactive glass should be shown and the results
achieved demonstrated. All patients underwent multiple surgery of a mucocele of the
frontal sinus and showed clear symptoms of recurrence and extensive bony defects.
In all three cases, despite the extremely unfavorable initial situation, a debilitating
and cosmetically satisfactory situation could be achieved by obliteration after complete
de-epithelialization and adequate closure. So far, no recurrence has been recorded.
In difficult cases, obliteration of the frontal sinus with bioactive glass may be
an additional therapy option. The complete deepithelialization of the frontal sinus
seems to be the crucial step.
