Gastrointestinal xanthomas are accumulations of foam cells in the lamina propria,
usually found in the gastric mucosa, although they can occur in other sections of
the digestive tract.
A 59-year-old woman performed gastroscopy and colonoscopy for anemia. Gastroscopy
showed a yellowish rough plate(1). On colonoscopy, from rectum(2), oval, yellowish,
granular-looking plates(3) were observed, which extended throughout the colon(4),
reaching the periapendicular mucosa(5). Biopsies confirmed the finding of xanthomas.
Conclusions Atypical presentation of xanthomas due to its location in the large intestine, its
extension from the rectum to the cecum and the coexistence of gastric and colorectal
location, not previously described.
