Patrick F. Forde et al. Preclinical evaluation of an endoscopic electroporation system
Targeted delivery of specific chemotherapeutic drugs into tumors can be achieved by
delivering electrical pulses directly to the tumor tissue. In a series of animal models,
Forde et al. assessed the efficacy of electroporation delivered through a special
device in combination with bleomycin. The authors found that tumor volume reduced
significantly, with cell death being induced rapidly, mainly via an apoptotic-type
mechanism. This novel therapy may become an addition to the endoscopist’s armamentarium
for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer.
