Sound Therapy with broadband noise produced by sound generators or hearing aids for
a couple of hours daily is the therapy for our tinnitus patients.
We treated 10 patients aged 27 to 54 years old with no underlying hearing loss The
onset of tinnitus was 3 months to 2 years. They all had the appropriate questionnaires
filled at the first visit before the sound generator fit. Follow up conducted 2,4
weeks and 2,3 and 6 months after the first fit. The questionnaires were again given
after the first follow-up. During the follow-up visits, subjective comments and feedback
from the patients were documented. Certain adjustments if required were also performed.
6 patients reported quieter and more bearable tinnitus. 2 patients reported total
liberation from tinnitus and the other 2 had no positive effect on tinnitus. All our
patients are still attending follow-up visits as some patients need more time for
a positive effect.
Our results are hard to analyze as it is not clear if they are due to Sound Therapy
alone or to a combination with counseling or even to a placebo effect. Unfortunately,
tinnitus is treatable but not curable. Last but not least, tinnitus results cannot
objectively be measured.
