Welcome to 2023. We are pleased that Journal of Diabetes and Endocrine Practice (JDEP) is stepping into its sixth year of age.
We are starting a new tradition of publishing our annual Gulf Association of Endocrinology
and Diabetes (GAED) Medal lecture in the year's first issue. We are very grateful
to Prof. Rayaz A. Malik who kindly agreed to take us through his story of challenging
the dogma in diabetic neuropathy and beyond by reviewing his work in Scotland, Manchester,
and Qatar in a very informative and entertaining manner. The second review in the
issue narrates the literature on diabetes and Ramadan in 2022.
Three original articles are included; all reflect our region's clinical practice.
The first article, by Ismael et al, depicts the prevalence of cardiovascular risk
factors and associated estimated risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in
adult volunteers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The second article, by the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA) Endocrine Research group, is a mixed methods study on physicians'
and patients' perceptions and practices of thyroxine replacement therapy during Ramadan
fasting. The third article, by Dr. Jamila Elamouri, depicts the incidence and risk
factors for developing new-onset diabetes after kidney transplantation in Tripoli,
Libya. Finally, a clinical vignette is the week's lesson, telling a near-miss story
of a slow-onset type 1 diabetes in a young woman assumed to be type 2 diabetes despite
all the warning. She was saved in the nick of time before she crashed into euglycemic
diabetic ketoacidosis secondary to the recently added Sodium Glucose Co-Transporter
2 inhibitors.
As the journal steps into its sixth year, the editorial team feels strongly that it
is about time that an application for indexation by Directory of Open Access Journal
(DOAJ) and Medline is made. We have shared our opinion with our publisher, hoping
they see it our way. We remain indebted to the researchers and key opinion leaders
for choosing JDEP to disseminate their research results and share their opinions.
