The Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) in the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is dedicated to scientific opinions on the safety and efficacy of herbal substances and their preparations for medicinal use among EU Member States.

Out of herbal monographs, several additional guidance documents in the areas of quality, safety and efficacy of herbal medicinal products have been developed, public statements among them. Selected examples of public statements on Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), estragole, pulegone and menthofuran as well as herbals for which there are special safety concerns (Chelidonium majus, Salvia officinalis ess oil, etc.) will be presented and discussed.
