Introduction: The nutritional and laboratory status presented by cancer patients before surgical
interventions has a direct relationship with the postoperative clinical outcome. Objectives: To associate the length of hospital stay of cancer patients that underwent surgical
procedures at the Cuiabá General Hospital - MT with the nutritional status and laboratory
parameters evaluated on the preoperative stage. Methodology: Retrospective cross-sectional
analytical study with 67 patients who underwent oncology surgery from the period of
July 2018 to February 2019 in a philanthropic hospital in Cuiabá-MT. The variables
considered for the study were: the predominant types of cancer, subjective global
assessment of nutritional status (SGA), nutritional risk evaluation (NRS-2002) and
laboratory profile. For data analysis and statistical assessments Epi Info program
(7.2.2.6) was used. Results: The most predominant types of cancer were Colorectal 1.4% (9/67), Uterus 11.9% (8/67),
Breast 11.9% (8/67) and Ovarian 10.4% (7/67). From the total, 23.8% (16/67) were malnourished
before surgery, 34.3% (23/67) had high postoperative nutritional risk, and 46.2% (31/67)
required nutritional recovery. Hemoglobin levels was altered in 32.8% (22/67) patients,
hematocrit levels were altered in 55.2% (37/67) patients, total leukocytes were altered
in 34.3% (23/67) patients, albumin level were altered in 22.9% (8/67) and creatinine
levels were altered in 7.5% (5/67) patients. The postoperative length of hospitalization
over 11 days was 16.4% (17/67). The variables associated with the longest hospital
stay were preoperative malnutrition (RR = 3.9), high postoperative nutritional risk
(RR = 4.7) and decreased levels of hemoglobin (RR = 1.4). Conclusion: In the present study, preoperative and postoperative malnutrition, as well as low
hemoglobin level, were significantly related to long hospital stays.
